The Guyana Peace Council (GPC) salutes the Government and people of Venezuela on the occasion of the establishment of its First Republic on April 19, 1810. This historic action paved the way for the eventual overthrow of Spanish colonial rule not only in Venezuela but in the continent as a whole.

April 19 is indeed a significant date in the evolution of Venezuelan politics which ushered in fundamental changes in the political, economic and social life of the country.

The Guyana Peace Council is cognizant of the challenges facing the Venezulean people at this time which threatens to derail the gains of the First Republic and that of the Bolivarian Revolution.

The GPC is however confident that the people of Venezuela would determine the way forward in national elections due on May 20, 2018.

It is the hope of the GPC that the will of the Venezulean people will be expressed in free and fair elections without any interference from internal or external forces.

The Guyana Peace Council (GPC) has noted with deep interest the decision taken by the Government of Cuba to transfer power as President of Cuba to Mr Miguel Diaz-Canel.

The GPC is confident that the revolutionary stance taken by the governments under the leadership of the late Fidel and his brother Raul Castro would be further advanced under the leadership of President Diaz-Canel.

The Guyana Peace Council is aware of the high esteem in which the new President is being held not only by the membership and leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba but by the Cuban people as a whole and takes the opportunity to wish him well in the execution of his office as President.

The GPC also expresses its appreciation to former President Raul Castro for so ably leading the Cuban nation despite the enormous challenges caused by the continuing US embargo against the country.
